Why knit with merino wool?

Discover the natural properties of merino wool.

“Wool is generally a forgiving material to knit with. It is often fluffy and can, in some cases, hide a small mistake.”

Vibe Ulrik Søndergaard, knitting designer at DILLING

We could tell you a lot about why merino wool is wonderful to knit with, but once you feel it in your hands, the material speaks for itself. If you would still like to be sure that merino wool is the right yarn for your next knitting project, here are the benefits that make it such an obvious choice.

Yarn made from nature's own fibers

All merino is wool, but not all wool is merino. Properties and quality can vary considerably from one type of wool to another. Our merino wool yarn is 100% organic and comes from sheep that are not subjected to mulesing. In addition, our merino wool yarn is not Superwash-treated, simply to protect the natural properties of the wool fibers.

Let's take a closer look at them.

Benefits of merino wool

Merino wool is among the finest and softest wool qualities in the world. The fibers from merino sheep are thinner than those from other breeds of sheep, which makes the wool soft, light and pleasant to work with, and not least to wear next to the skin. When merino fibers come into contact with warm skin, they simply bend more easily than coarser wool qualities.

Soft and comfortable

Merino wool is among the finest and softest wool qualities in the world. The fibers from merino sheep are thinner than those from other breeds of sheep, which makes the wool soft, light and pleasant to work with, and not least to wear next to the skin. When merino fibers come into contact with warm skin, they simply bend more easily than coarser wool qualities.

Temperature regulating

In its natural form, wool regulates temperature. The fine fibers create tiny pockets of air that both insulate against the cold and help protect against heat. This means you can use merino wool yarn for knitting projects all year round – and not only in the cold winter months.

Breathable and moisture absorbing

By nature, merino wool can absorb a large proportion of its own weight in moisture without feeling wet. Here we can once again thank the many tiny pockets of air between the individual wool fibers, which draw moisture away from the skin. That is also why the skin finds it much easier to breathe in merino wool, because it is kept dry.

Knit with soft, defined stitches

The quality and fineness of merino wool make it softer than traditional wool, while it is also forgiving to knit with, for beginners and experienced knitters alike. If you want a clean finish with soft, defined stitches, merino wool yarn is the right choice. It is also ideal for baby and children's knits, as there are no loose fibers to irritate.

The yarn gives a little when you pull it tight, then springs back and holds its shape. After the first wash, the work typically becomes more even too, and the wool will “open up”.

Knitting tip

“If you feel the stitches are not sliding easily over the needles, try a needle in a different material, but make sure you match the correct gauge.”

Vibe Ulrik Søndergaard, knitting designer at DILLING

Merino wool without Superwash treatment

Superwash is a chemical treatment that improves the washing properties of wool, so that the fibers, in short, become more resistant to changes in temperature and rough handling. Unfortunately, it also inhibits many of the natural properties of wool, such as the ability to insulate against the cold, regulate your body temperature and absorb moisture.

At DILLING, we let wool be wool. That is why we do not treat our merino wool yarn with Superwash. We do it to protect the wonderful natural properties of wool and to make sure you get the best possible product for your knitting projects.
