Dividing embroidery thread

How to divide six-strand embroidery thread into separate strands.

Technique: The basic techniques
Creator: DILLING

Classic DMC embroidery thread consists of six strands. When embroidering, you will often need to divide the thread into separate strands to vary the thickness of your stitches.

How to do it:

  • Cut a piece of embroidery thread approx. 60 cm long.
  • Slowly pull out one strand at a time, as shown in the video above.
  • Pull out the number of strands you need for your embroidery.
  • Bring them together again by holding the strands at one end and gently running your hand along them so they gather neatly.

Tip: Avoid pulling too hard or twisting the thread, as this can cause it to tangle. If the thread starts to twist, let it hang freely for a moment so it can naturally straighten out. Gently pull the strand to release the tension before continuing.
